Rafael van der Vaart backs Frenkie de Jong transfer to Manchester United

Manchester United’s proposals to sign Frenkie de Jong is being weighed up by Barcelona, Marca report.

The midfielder’s future is a big talking point in the Netherlands too, where De Jong has been impressing over the past week, including a particularly dominant display against Belgium.

His present and future was discussed this week by former Dutch international Rafael van der Vaart, who starred in the Premier League for Tottenham, and for Real Madrid alongside Cristiano Ronaldo in the 2009/10 season.

Van der Vaart told Ziggo Sport, report Ajax Showtime, that he is in favour of Frenkie de Jong leaving Barcelona to join Manchester United.

Van der Vaart backs Frenkie de Jong transfer

Van der Vaart explained: “At Barcelona he stands between players like Pedri and Gavi who can do the same as him. In the Dutch national team he is the only one with this quality.

“That [a transfer] would be ideal. There is a coach who knows exactly what he can and cannot do.

“Manchester United also need some quality. He will be the only one of his kind at United.

“If he had to choose today, I would go to United if I were him.”

Van der Vaart isn’t wrong, United simply don’t have a player like him, with his skill set and experience, who can be of immediate help to the first team.

The midfield is low on numbers after Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba’s departures, and this has to be Manchester United’s first priority.

As we said this week amid news United will miss out on Darwin Nunez, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to spend £80 million on a striker when the midfield is so barren in quality. Landing De Jong is more important.

Even if United end up spending £68 million on De Jong, as  Marca suggest the club are prepared to do, the fee could be money well spent.

As Van der Vaart points out, manager Erik ten Hag knows exactly how to use him after their time working together at Ajax, and this could make for a more successful time than he has enjoyed at Barcelona.

Now we just need De Jong to respond positively to his chat with Ten Hag, and take the gamble.
