Frenkie de Jong shows why Manchester United want him with dominant Dutch display

Frenkie de Jong produced a masterclass of a performance to lead Netherlands to a 4-1 victory over Belgium.

De Jong’s motivation might have been to show Barcelona that they can’t do without him. But the La Liga side will have been counting their money watching his performance.

Even if he wasn’t trying to catch United’s eye, De Jong’s role in a dominant Dutch display underlined why he is proving hard for former boss Erik ten Hag to give up on.

Dominant Dutch display

De Jong led a dominant Dutch display against Kevin de Bruyne’s Belgium, which may augur well for Manchester United if he does sign.

He provided the opening assist for Steven Bergwijn’s first half goal, and continued to run the show.

De Jong completed more passes (77) than any player on the pitch, from 82 attempts, a 94 per cent pass accuracy.

He created four chances, touched the ball 93 times, made two successful dribbles, and completed three of three long balls attempted as he mixed up his passing.

Defensively he made seven ball recoveries and three clearances, plus two interceptions.

De Jong was frequently the first out-ball for the Dutch defence, and everything went through him. He goes looking for possession, and does not hide.

Manchester United need a midfielder like this who can run games. The club has missed this for far too long.

Jurrien Timber also starred in defence as part of a back three, completing 90 per cent of his passes, making three interceptions and two clearances.

Another target, Tyrell Malacia, was an unused substitute, while former United star Daley Blind provided two second half assists.

De Jong’s performance will provide further food for through for United and Barcelona. The midfielder showed he is the real deal, a player any club would be fortunate to have. Talks are ongoing between the clubs, and United could yet get their man.
