Pundit claims Bruno Fernandes will never reach the heights of another Premier League star

Jamie Carragher has explained why, in his opinion, Bruno Fernandes will never reach the level of Kevin De Bruyne.

Kevin De Bruyne made his return for Manchester City against Newcastle United at St James’ Park and with the score at 2-1 to the Geordie side, a goal and an assist won City the game.

Bruno Fernandes, despite the struggles around him, has had a productive season for Manchester United and remains one of the top creators in the Red Devils team but has still faced criticism this season due to his perceived underperformance as captain.

Ever since Fernandes moved to England in January 2020, the comparisons between the former Sporting Lisbon midfielder and the Belgian have been constant.

Carragher on Fernandes and De Bruyne

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has weighed in on the debate over who is better and he believes that the City midfielder is one of the best in the league, if not the best.

“I always used to describe [Paul] Pogba a bit like this – I think there’s a difference between a great talent and a great player,” Carragher said on the latest episode of the Stick To Football show.

“Pogba was a great talent, but I didn’t think he was a great player and the same with Bruno Fernandes. No doubt the talent is there but there’s just something [missing] and the great players, it’s in their head of where they need to be whether it’s defensively or to receive the ball – like [Kevin] De Bruyne.

“De Bruyne is better than Fernandes but in terms of creating chances and different things, Fernandes is not a million miles away from them.

“We’ve seen him under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, I’ve watched him where – and it’s not been lazy by the way – he’s just running everywhere and this is without the ball by the way.”

Fernandes and De Bruyne

Comparing these two players, especially this season, is a difficult ask due to the struggles United, and Erik ten Hag, are currently going through.

Putting Fernandes in a stable and consistent team like City, the Portuguese midfielder would easily be the best in the league because of how well-drilled they are.

However, putting De Bruyne in a faltering team like United and the Belgian would also struggle because the team identity is not there and the Red Devils, under the Dutchman, are just not consistent enough to get the best out of their attacking talents.
