Manchester United fans are breathing a sigh of relief as Chelsea, Tottenham and Leicester make managerial moves.

It has been a busy week for managerial sackings. Manchester United can feel quite smug about it.

United’s decision to hire Erik ten Hag is looking like an excellent choice. The Dutchman has won one trophy already in his debut season in English football and is on track to lead the team into the top four.

While not perfect, he has some issues to solve, Ten Hag is demonstrating he was a savvy choice for Manchester United when looking at the misfortune of others.

Manchester United get it right…

Let’s look at three bad decisions Manchester United could have made…

Brendan Rodgers

Back in November 2021, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s departure imminent, a report from Caught Offside alleged a verbal agreement between Brendan Rodgers and Manchester United had been reached.

Manchester United fans gave it zero credence. This was not a likely nor a popular move for the former Liverpool boss.

Rodgers has now been dismissed by Leicester after his project at the club went stale. A lack of investment this season hasn’t helped, but at time of his departure, the Foxes sit slumped in the relegation zone.

Graham Potter

Graham Potter was touted as a young progressive coach who was destined for a top club. Chelsea ended up taking the gamble.

When they did, pundit Paul Merson said Manchester United would regret not hiring him and labelled him better than Erik ten Hag.

He told SportsKeeda: “I’ve said before that Manchester United should have got him ahead of Erik ten Hag and I stand by that statement.”

That one is not working out is it. Potter joined a chaotic club at Chelsea, but the job just looked too big for him.

Antonio Conte

Remember when Manchester United beat Tottenham 3-0 to accelerate Nuno Santo’s sacking and Spurs fans claimed they actually won because they ‘beat United’ to Antonio Conte?

The Guardian had reported Conte was keen on the Manchester United job. The club were not interested, with the Italian’s reputation as a short-term worker who would eventually blow up his own project.

His spell at Spurs collapsed within 18 months, and he lost both matches he managed against United by a combined score of 5-2.

An impatient United would have hired Conte. Thankfully the club took a long term approach and waited for a manager who was the right fit, who should be here for the long haul.
