Bruno Fernandes and Portugal got back to winning ways against the USA, and the Portuguese press had a lot to say about it.

Portugal are benefiting from an in-form Bruno Fernandes, who has found a second wind in his career after an ill-advised Ruben Amorim experiment.

He assisted both goals in Portugal’s 2-0 victory against the USA, which was just vindication for his performances after the goalless draw against Mexico in the previous game.

The Portuguese press was in full recognition of their “maestro” after the game, noting his “brilliance” as “Captain America” who speaks in Portuguese.

Portuguese press on Bruno Fernandes vs the USA

Fernandes is second only to Cristiano Ronaldo in the Portuguese team based on pure brand value and recognition.

With Ronaldo’s on-pitch star also fading, Fernandes is the talisman, which means he will grab the most headlines every game, good or bad.

Thankfully, this one was good, and the Portuguese press showered him with immense praise.

A Bola coined him “Captain America” after he downed the Americans, writing, “Bruno Fernandes plays and makes others play, uniting what is loose and bringing brilliance to the dullness.”

Another report by A Bola said Fernandes is the “adult in the room” for the national team, noting his experience and the ability to create something out of nothing.

Record directed a cheeky dig at the USA, calling Fernandes a “maestro” of both football and soccer, a reference to the term used by the USA for football.

O Jogo noted Fernandes’ brilliant backheel assist for Joao Felix’s goal, his first of two assists on the night.

Fernandes is set for a generational season

Fernandes finding a second wind in his career at the age of 31 is immense because he is set for a generational season.

By the time the next season begins, there’s a very real chance that he will have broken the Premier League assist record for a season, playing Champions League football at Old Trafford, won the World Cup, and shot up the rankings for Ballon d’Or.

The only thing that can stop him from becoming one of the greatest ever in the Premier League is a league title, which Ineos are all-in on helping him with.

Once that happens, the debate won’t be “Is Bruno Fernandes a Man Utd legend?” It will be where Fernandes sits in the pantheon of all-time greatest foreign imports in English football.
