Phil Jones has praised Manchester United for a huge call that was made after Michael Carrick made his sensational return to Old Trafford as interim boss.

Carrick will serve as interim Manchester United head coach until the end of the 2025-26 Premier League season amid Ineos’ hunt for a new permanent manager.

Darren Fletcher had previously been in charge for two matches as caretaker manager before returning to his role as Manchester United Under-18s head coach.

The Red Devils’ campaign took an ugly turn earlier this month after Ineos made the decision to sack ex-Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim from his role as head coach.

Carrick has appointed Holland as his Man Utd assistant manager and Phil Jones believes that the Red Devils made the right call to bring him to the club.

“I think we touched on it before the show that [with] Steve Holland coming in, I thought that was a really good piece of business,” he told the Sports Illustrated Football Club Show.

“I was with Steve quite a few camps at England [and] I thought he was terrific on the grass.”

What Phil Jones knows about Man Utd assistant manager Steve Holland after Michael Carrick’s key appointment

Holland made a real name for himself during his work with former England manager Sir Gareth Southgate for the Three Lions and was widely hailed for his influence.

Former Man Utd and England defender Jones made an astute assessment of what ex-England assistant manager Holland is like as a key figure in the coaching staff.

“He’s very calm,” he explained.

“He’s very sort of quiet [in] the way he goes about his business, but he’s tactically very good on the grass and I think the club have really recruited someone really well there who can really help them in and out of possession.”

Carrick and Holland kicked off the post-Ruben Amorim era with an emphatic result on Saturday afternoon, with Man Utd beating Manchester City 2-0 at Old Trafford.
