Manchester United defender Phil Jones has made a rare appearance. The injured star is at Wembley for the Carabao Cup final as a pundit.

Jones has not played a single game since April 2022 and has not featured under Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag said recently that Jones has only completed one training session, back in July.

Jones is out of contract at the end of the season and is expected to be released.

Phil Jones speaks out

Phil Jones will be working as a pundit at Wembley for Manchester United’s Carabao Cup final against Newcastle.

The former England international was pitch side with Gary Neville and Roy Keane, working for Sky Sports.

He was asked at the beginning of the broadcast how he is. Jones said the past few months has been a tough physical and mental challenge.

He told Sky Sports: “I’m good. It’s been a long road. There’s no hiding away from that.

“I’m a strong character. I’m doing everything I can to get out on the pitch.

“I love playing football it’s something I love doing, so that’s the aim.”

Jones is not registered in Manchester United’s squad for the Premier League or Europa League.

The defender recently turned 31 and is assigned United’s number four shirt. A decision was made to renew his contract back in 2019.

He joined United back in 2011 under Sir Alex Ferguson and won the league title in 2012/13, and was part of England’s World Cup squad in 2018.

His career has been wrecked by a succession of injuries in recent seasons, with his brief comeback last season leading to another setback which has ruled him out of this entire campaign.
