Peter Schmeichel has taken issue with one top-class Manchester United player after his latest blow.
Being a Manchester United legend the opinion of Peter Schmeichel holds a lot of weight, and now he has had some advice for one current player.
The original great Dane is held in high regard, with Andre Onana being a real fan of Schmeichel’s ability as a goalkeeper.
Paul Scholes once called Schmeichel unbeatable and he really was key in the treble-winning success of United in 1999.
Now, one Manchester United player has been slammed over a decision he made this summer, and Schmeichel is spot on.
Peter Schmeichel tells Luke Shaw that Manchester United must come first
With the new season hours away, Schmeichel has taken issue with the fact Luke Shaw is once again absent through injury. Speaking to BBC 5 Live, as quoted by Simon Stone, Schmeichel blasted Shaw for being fit for England and not United.
Ten Hag confirmed on Thursday that Shaw will miss the opener and likely an additional amount of time.
“Luke Shaw last played (for Utd) in February and yet he still went to the Euros. I think he played a little bit in the quarter-final, and then some of the semi-final and then he played the final.
“Now, he’s injured again. He’s so important. He’s got experience and he’s a top-class left-back. He’s a Manchester United player – we pay him.
“He should be focusing and prioritising Manchester United and not his country.”
Schmeichel is absolutely correct that Shaw should not have been at the Euros and instead should have focussed on getting fit for United’s 2024/25 season – but really that decision should have been made by medical staff.
He will be out for a short period of time at the beginning of this season, but Shaw’s continued injury woes are becoming tiresome.
Fans are getting more than fed up with how Shaw seems incapable of staying fit – unless it is for England.
Manchester United should give up on Shaw
On his day, there are few left-backs in the world better than Shaw, however, that day over the past year has become rarer and rarer for United.
Now, it is getting to the point that Ineos must be completely ready to cut ties and sign a replacement for Shaw.
It is hardly a surprise either, if a player cannot be relied upon to play then there simply cannot be a place for him in the plans – at least as a starter.
Harry Amass is coming up – but probably is not quite ready for the starting berth right now.
This summer has been successful so far, but if United have any time left after signing a midfielder, then a left-back must be on the list.
