Peter Schmeichel has insisted that one “crazy” Manchester United match was the best fixture of his legendary Red Devils playing career under Sir Alex Ferguson.
The 60-year-old Dane was a key figure for legendary former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson during the 1990s.
Signed from Brondby for a £505,000 fee in 1991, Peter Schmeichel enjoyed incredible success during his illustrious spell at Old Trafford.
The United legend lifted five Premier League titles, a Champions League, three FA Cups and two League Cups during his spell under Ferguson.
Schmeichel was also an integral part of the famous United team that captured a continental treble in the memorable 1998-99 season.
The former United No 1 is widely considered one of the best Premier League shot-stoppers of all time after his glittering success at Old Trafford.

Schmeichel on ‘best’ Man Utd match
Peter Schmeichel, who made 388 appearances across his Manchester United career, has previously opened up about his experience on the iconic treble-winning season.
The ex-Denmark international was on the field when United clinched the treble with a sensational 2-1 comeback win against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Ahead of the 1999 Champions League final at the Camp Nou, Sir Alex Ferguson’s United secured a famous semi-final victory over Arsenal in the FA Cup.
The Red Devils and Arsenal played out a 0-0 draw at Villa Park in April 1999 before returning to Aston Villa’s stadium a few days later for the FA Cup replay.
Speaking to FourFourTwo magazine, Schmeichel said: “It was the best game I ever took part in – just the most crazy match, everything happened.
“You don’t think about all of that when you’re in it, it’s only when you come away from that season, you look back at how it unfolded and think, ‘What?!’”
Schmeichel on Arsenal vs Man Utd
United took the lead in the FA Cup semi-final replay through David Beckham in the first half before Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp pulled back an equaliser.
Schmeichel kept United in the contest and forced the tie to extra time after he denied Dennis Bergkamp from the spot-kick at Villa Park.
United legend Ryan Giggs then punched the Red Devils’ ticket to the FA Cup final with a sensational solo winner against the Gunners.
Schmeichel has insisted that United “didn’t have time to ponder” over the win due to the Red Devils looking ahead to their next fixtures in the treble season.
“I didn’t even know where we were in the game when I saved the penalty – I thought that if he scored, there was time to get an equaliser,” he said.
“I was quite surprised when the whistle went very soon after.
“Then Ryan Giggs’ goal… We didn’t have time to ponder, we had to zone in on the next league game, then Juventus in the Champions League semi-final.
“That was what that treble-winning season was all about – we had to win every game, because in England, Arsenal were winning each game, too.”
