Manchester United’s defeat at Anfield is going to take a while to get over. It’s clear Erik ten Hag has a big job on his hands.
It was not just a normal loss. United conceded seven goals without reply, completely collapsing in the second half.
Legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson was in attendance at Anfield. He had the misfortune of watching the game, and won’t have been happy.
Fergie was on the wrong end of a handful of big scores, just nothing quite this bad.

Schmeichel on United defeat
Fergie’s former star goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has provided some insight on how Sir Alex would react to a loss like this.
He explained that he would put all his focus into moving forward in a positive manner, and would not spend too much time hammering on at what went wrong.
Schmeichel was quoted by The Mail: “We all know what happened in the game, what went wrong and what didn’t go well. He had to build us up again. If he was taking that to the trip back home and the next day, at some point you have to draw a line.
“The next game is just around the corner, it is Betis on Thursday. You have to clear the air. We have to change this and move on, you cannot keep turning back to a bad defeat.”
There is more data and technology to dissect games nowadays than during Fergie’s time as manager, and there may be a little more time spent deconstructing what went wrong.
But Schmeichel’s words point to a strength of Ten Hag, his man management skills. United’s players will be humiliated enough already, they will need rebuilding and their confidence restored.
United have a big squad of players too, for Ten Hag to lean on. He will know which players need to play to get over this mauling, and who could do with dropping out of the team for their own good, and for the benefit of their teammates.
There are still some tricky fixtures upcoming between now and the end of the season, with Newcastle, Tottenham and Brighton among the away trips. United can’t afford another defeat like this, or even half as bad.
