Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has made his feelings perfectly clear about a “silly decision” that he made during his illustrious spell at Old Trafford.
The 61-year-old Dane is regarded as one of Manchester United’s best ‘keepers of all time and one of the all-time shot-stoppers in the Premier League’s history.
Sir Alex Ferguson brought Peter Schmeichel to England in 1991 after United paid a transfer fee of £505,000 to sign the club legend from Danish outfit Brondby IF.
Schmeichel had a seminal impact during his prolific run at Old Trafford and the former Denmark international hoovered up the major silverware with United.
The former United No 1 lifted five Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, three FA Cups and a League Cup before his Old Trafford exit.

Peter Schmeichel asked about one huge decision that he made at Man Utd under Sir Alex Ferguson
Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel made the big call to mark his departure from the Premier League club after Sir Alex Ferguson’s men won the treble in 1999.
Schmeichel was a key part of United’s famed treble-winning side, but the former Red Devils shot-stopper had seen his confidence shaken during the 1998-99 campaign.
The former Denmark ‘keeper would sign for Sporting CP in 1999 and played for the Portuguese outfit until 2001 before he made his return to England with Aston Villa.
Speaking to Kate Scott, Schmeichel was asked if there were any regrets about the way that he left the Red Devils during Ferguson’s reign as United manager.
“Absolutely, massive regrets, massive regrets,” he responded on CBS Sports Golazo.
“It was a silly decision; it was just stupid, you know. Why would you leave Man Utd?
“I still played well for four more years, and if I stayed, I could’ve played more, maybe five or six years.”
What Man Utd legend Peter Schmeichel would have done differently before he made his decision to leave Old Trafford
Schmeichel’s spell at Aston Villa was short-lived and the United legend would make the shock decision to sign for Manchester City in 2002.
The former Aston Villa and Manchester City player has admitted that he should have spoken to Ferguson before he made his decision to leave Old Trafford.
Schmeichel added: “I knew I could talk to the manager about everything and he would listen and accommodate.
“I should’ve spoken to him and said, ‘I want to play every game, but I know I can’t play every game, can we work around that?’
“I should’ve done that and I should’ve stayed.”
Schmeichel saw out the remainder of his career at City and the former Sporting CP shot-stopper called it time on his glittering career in 2003.
