Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has received a lot of praise over the past day after his heroic substitute performance against Brentford.
Erik ten Hag’s side jumped up to ninth in the table and have Scott McTominay to thank as his late double prevented Manchester United from losing three home games in a row.
The treatment of the midfielder has been a confusing one and it seemed for all the world that the 26-year-old would be leaving Old Trafford.
Former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, speaking on Premier League Productions, can’t understand why the midfielder hasn’t featured more for the Red Devils.

Schmeichel on McTominay
“I don’t understand what coaches are doing. Scott McTominay was up for sale all summer and I don’t understand that,” Schmeichel said following the Scotsman’s superb substitute performance against Thomas Frank’s side.
“He’s a fantastic player, you need utility players. You need players that can play different positions, that can come from the bench and change the course of the game and he’s definitely one of them.
McTominay has shone for Scotland in recent weeks as he has been deployed further forward for his national team and has performed very well.
The midfielder sits as the joint top goalscorer in the Euro 2024 qualifiers with six goals, he’s alongside former United striker Romelu Lukaku and current United frontman Rasmus Hojlund.
Is Schmeichel right
Over the last year, McTominay has lined up alongside Christian Eriksen at the base of the midfield before being taken out of the team for Casemiro.
The United academy graduate has been in and out of the team since then but it seems the midfielder should be brought in further forward.
When the 26-year-old came onto the pitch, it was very much route one football from United but having that weapon available in the club’s attacking arsenal can only be a good thing.
If McTominay wants a future at Old Trafford, playing more as a striker may well be his way back into the side.
