Manchester United took a step towards Champions League qualification with a win over Chelsea.

After beating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Manchester United need only six points to secure Champions League qualification.

United are in third place heading into the final five fixtures.

When Ruben Amorim was sacked, United were in sixth place. Michael Carrick has led the team to eight wins from 12 matches in charge.

He has put himself into a strong position to land the Manchester United head coach job on a permanent basis.

Scholes: Calm down

Michael Carrick has led Manchester United into a strong position, with Champions League football almost guaranteed.

During the latest episode of The Good, The Bad & The Football, Paul Scholes was asked if Michael Carrick should be a ‘guarantee’ for the job if Manchester United finish in third place.

Scholes was reluctant to give Carrick his backing, urging against a knee-jerk reaction. He said that he was still frustrated by last week’s 2-1 defeat to Leeds.

“I think it’s important that you don’t get too carried away, too emotional with it. That Leeds game last week, you wouldn’t think that [it’s a done deal].

“I was looking at Michael and I was worried for him, they were outplayed by Leeds and I was thinking ‘do something’.”

There is no doubt that the Leeds defeat was frustrating, but Manchester United responded in the right way, with an important win over Chelsea.

The 12-game sample size for Michael Carrick suggests the club are onto a winner – but Scholes would like to see more.

He has been consistently on the record stating he prefers a more proven manager to his former teammate.
