Manchester United took a major step towards clinching Champions League qualification with a win over Chelsea.
While the defeat to Leeds was a blow, Manchester United’s victory away at Chelsea was a bigger result. It was essential, moving further away from the chasing pack.
Manchester United are now 10 points clear of Chelsea, in sixth place in the Premier League table. Brentford are also level on points with them now.
There are five matches remaining, with United attempting to secure one of the top five places and qualify for the Champions League.
Here is a breakdown of how many points United require to mathematically be certain of a top five place.
Here’s how the Premier League table looks now this weekend’s games are complete – Confident??
There's no way United will blow a top five place!

Manchester United need only two wins
The maximum number of points Chelsea can get from their remaining five matches are 15. On current form that’s unlikely.
But even if they earn all 15, if Manchester United earn six more points, Chelsea cannot possibly overtake us.
- Man Utd with two more wins: 64 points
- Chelsea with five more wins: 63 points
The same is applicable to Brentford, who are level on points with Chelsea now. Manchester United face them next.
Chelsea’s fixtures are far from easy. Here is a look at their next five.
- Brighton (A), Forest (H), Liverpool (A), Tottenham (H), Sunderland (A)
Liam Rosenior’s side have now lost four consecutive Premier League games, and the prospects of them winning five in a row is slim. They may not even gain the 10 points they need to catch United’s current total.
Chelsea play Brighton away on Tuesday night (April 21), and if they drop points there, United’s task will become even simpler: Win one more game, and a victory over Brentford will end their hopes too.
As it is for now, Manchester United know that regardless of what Chelsea do, just six points from the remaining five games will secure Champions League qualification.
That’s a low bar that United should reach quite easily.
And while there will still be a desire to finish third rather than fifth, just securing a Champions League spot will be mission accomplished.
WHO was your MAN OF THE MATCH against Chelsea?
A massive performance and victory…
Manchester United’s remaining fixtures
Manchester United’s remaining five fixtures are not easy – but you would still back Michael Carrick’s side to get at least two wins from these.
If we beat Brentford, we could clinch it with a win over Liverpool.
