Paul Scholes revealed that a “sensational player” and an “outstanding” Manchester United legend were among his picks for the five best Red Devils players of all time.

The 50-year-old Manchester United legend is in the conversation himself as one of the best players in the Premier League club’s long-standing history.

Paul Scholes had a sensational impact at Old Trafford after breaking into the United first team in the 1990s under legendary former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

A United youth academy product, the former Red Devils midfielder would spend his entire legendary club playing career at Old Trafford across two separate spells.

Scholes, who was one of the ‘Class of ‘92’ breakout stars, was a key midfield influence for Sir Alex Ferguson’s legendary United teams of the past.

The United legend lifted 11 Premier League titles, two Champions League trophies, three FA Cups and two League Cups during his remarkable playing career.

Scholes made a whopping 716 appearances for the Red Devils and netted 155 times for United before he finally called it time on his career in 2013.

The ex-England international initially retired from football in 2011, but Scholes walked back on his decision and returned to United in 2012.

Scholes was part of the last United team to lift the Premier League title in the 2012-13 campaign before Ferguson bowed out of management in 2013.

Scholes’ five-man Man Utd rankings

Speaking to TNT Sports, Paul Scholes was asked to name his picks for the five best Manchester United players of all time in a difficult challenge.

The former United and England midfielder picked Eric Cantona for the No 5 spot and Bryan Robson and Roy Keane had to settle for fourth and third respectively.

Joining Eric Cantona, Bryan Robson and Roy Keane in the rankings was fellow United legend Wayne Rooney, who finished second in Scholes’ five-man list.

“Eric Cantona had a massive impact on the club,” Scholes said.

“I only played for him for a year, maybe two, but a sensational player and probably the missing link to this team which took them over the line to win the league.”

Speaking on Robson, he said: “Bryan Robson was a hero of mine growing up.

“I was lucky enough to play with him towards the end of his career but an all-action midfield player who could do absolutely everything that a Manchester United midfield player should be able to do.”

Scholes’ Man Utd ‘GOAT’ pick

Scholes admitted that former United teammate Ryan Giggs would be his top pick and he waxed lyrical about the Welshman’s impact at the Premier League club.

Ryan Giggs, much like Scholes, spent his entire legendary playing career at United and was one of the key Class of ‘92 success stories under Sir Alex Ferguson.

“Number one I’ll go for Ryan Giggs,” Scholes said.

“What he did from 17 up until he was 40 years of age for this club was outstanding.

“As a young winger going past people and getting this crowd off their feet, getting them excited, changing games for us, and then as an older player going into central midfield and being equally as influential.”
