Paul Scholes left fellow Red Devils legend Gary Neville in stitches after he recalled a story involving his “funniest” Manchester United teammate of all time.

The United legend was one of the famed ‘Class of ‘92’ members who burst into the United first team under Sir Alex Ferguson and etched a lasting legacy in the sport.

Scholes spent his entire club playing career at Old Trafford and lifted 11 Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues, three FA Cups and two League Cups.

The 49-year-old former United midfielder initially retired in 2011 before making a U-turn in 2012, with Scholes calling it time on his legendary playing career in 2013.

Following United’s last Premier League title triumph in 2013, Scholes has been a prominent figure in punditry and briefly managed Oldham Athletic and Salford City.

During his iconic playing career, the former England midfielder played alongside a roster of star-studded talent at United, including Al Nassr star Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, one former teammate stood out in Scholes’ mind as the funniest and the TNT Sports pundit admitted the ex-United player would do “some stupid stuff.”

Scholes reveals his funniest United teammate

Former England midfielder Nicky Butt, much like Scholes, came through United’s famed Class of ’92 and was a key member of Ferguson’s squads of the past.

Butt played alongside the likes of Scholes and Roy Keane in the heart of the United midfield and enjoyed a successful spell at Old Trafford before his departure in 2004.

Speaking on The Overlap in 2022, Neville asked Scholes who was his funniest teammate and the former England midfielder named Butt as his pick.

Scholes recalled one hilarious story in the United reserves involving Butt and Neville burst out in laughter at what his former Red Devils teammate did.

“Funniest teammate? Nicky Butt. Funny. Just funny, isn’t he?” Scholes said.

“You just sort of look at him and he’ll make you laugh. He did some stupid stuff, [didn’t] he?

“Was you [Neville] in the dressing room at Old Trafford when we were playing for the reserves? Was you not in there?

“You have the whiteboard, don’t you, where Jim Ryan comes in and announces the team.

“So, we’re all sat in there about [12:30] before a two o’clock kick-off. He writes ‘Butt, Butt, Butt’ in a 4-4-2 formation, don’t you remember? In a permanent marker. He couldn’t get it off.

“So, Jim Ryan walks in to announce the team, he’s got Nicky Butt in 4-4-2. Brilliant.”

Scholes’ close connection with Butt

Butt left Old Trafford in 2004 and went on to play for Newcastle, Birmingham City and South China before he called it time on his career.

Scholes admitted that former United and England teammate Butt was his “best mate” and was “devastated” when he left the Red Devils.

“It was all part of football. When you start out with those five or six lads you hope that you’ll be there for the next 20 years,” he told DAZN in 2020, as per the Metro.

“Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work out that way. You lose people along the way.

“Nicky went and Nicky was my best mate – I’d grown up with him since I was 12 or 13. You’re devastated, I really was devastated.”
