Manchester United legend Paul Scholes did not hesitate for one moment after he was asked who was the best teammate in his entire illustrious playing career.

Paul Scholes spent his entire playing club career at Manchester United and thrived under the direct tutelage of former manager Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

The United legend, who retired for the second time in 2013, is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders of all time after his remarkable impact at the Red Devils.

Across his two separate spells at Old Trafford, Scholes lifted 11 Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues, three FA Cups and two League Cups.

Ferguson hailed the influence that the ex-United midfielder had at Old Trafford, with the Scotsman naming him among the four world-class players he managed.

United legend Roy Keane has also paid tribute to Scholes and previously dropped the ultimate compliment on his former Red Devils teammate.

Scholes’ career at both club level and on the international stage saw him share the pitch with a roster of talented players, including Cristiano Ronaldo and Eric Cantona.

However, there was one particular United legend who stood out in Scholes’ mind as the best teammate he ever had in his legendary career.

Scholes names best teammate ever

Following on from his playing career, Paul Scholes has opened up about his time at Manchester United and even named the funniest teammate he played alongside.

The 49-year-old ex-United and England midfielder also shared who is the best striker he played with at Old Trafford, having played alongside several prolific forwards.

During an appearance on the MUTV Group Chat, Scholes was asked who would be the best teammate he played alongside and the United legend named Ryan Giggs.

Giggs came through the United youth academy alongside Scholes and was part of the famed ‘Class of ‘92’ players who flourished under Sir Alex Ferguson.

“Ryan Giggs. Easy one,” Scholes said in 2020.

“Again, like I said before to Ben [Thornley], you play with so many great, great players and you’re lucky enough to play with so many players.

“Like I said, as a midfield player, I always felt wide players and No 10s were… they’re the ones that win you games.

“And the players I, as a midfield player, liked to link with, I go back to Teddy [Sheringham] and Yorkie [Dwight Yorke], brilliant players. I had a real understanding with them.

“I played a season at No 10 or half at No 10 and a little bit of the left-hand side – because Giggsy was injured – with Ruud van Nistelrooy and I loved that because you know just having that link with a player [and] you know what each other wants and that’s what makes a good team, I suppose.”

Scholes on ‘special’ Man Utd legend Giggs

Scholes admitted that he admired both Giggs’ longevity and how the United legend transitioned from a winger to a central midfielder in the later stages of his career.

The former United star insisted that Giggs would “always be the best,” despite admitting that his best teammate ever is a “very difficult” question to answer.

“But, you know, Giggsy was… Giggsy was special and you know from that exciting young, quick player going past people, flying past people, them big European nights on a Wednesday night, your job was made simple,” Scholes continued.

“Just get your ball to Giggsy, get your ball to Cristiano [Ronaldo] to David Beckham and they produce excitement for you.

“And then for Giggsy to go on as long as he did, for the longevity of his career to then to go into the centre midfield when – look, he was still quick, don’t get me wrong, but he was nowhere as quick as he was as a left-sided player.

“But he went into that position and he was equally as good in that position.

“So, whenever anybody asks me, it’s very difficult to answer, but Ryan Giggs will always be the best.”
