Paul Scholes has opened up about just how crucial tonight’s Champions League clash against FC Copenhagen is for Manchester United.
Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United need a win against the Danish side to keep their faint hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the competition alive.
After the Red Devils lost their opening two games in the group, two wins over the Danish side to take United’s tally to six points will be crucial.
Paul Scholes, speaking ahead of the mammoth clash at Old Trafford, has commented on the awkward position United are in and the need for a win against the Danish champions.
Scholes on United’s ‘terrible position’
The former United midfielder spoke to TNT Sports and it seems Scholes believes the team just aren’t firing at this moment in time, despite back-to-back Premier League victories.
“This week is vitally important. They’re in a terrible position after losing to Galatasaray, that first home game was a complete disaster,” Scholes said.
“I’m not sure how much confidence the two wins in the Premier League will give them. One of them was scraped through [against Brentford], and again the performance wasn’t great again on Saturday night against a team you would expect to be relegated [Sheffield United].
“They’re just not firing at the minute. I’m not sure what the issue is, there seems to be a lot of changes all the time, and they can’t seem to get a consistent team, whether it’s through injuries or suspensions, whatever it may be.”
United’s need for a good run of form
Despite the small matter of the Manchester derby on Sunday, a win in the Champions League, making it three in a row in all competitions, would be crucial for Ten Hag.
With players returning from injury, including Sergio Reguilon and Kobbie Mainoo, the Red Devils may well be approaching full strength.
With the next two games coming at Old Trafford, it’s a chance for the fans to get behind the players and go on a winning run.
