The final Manchester derby of the 2025-26 Premier League campaign will be Michael Carrick’s first match in charge since his appointment as interim head coach.

Ruben Amorim was sacked as Man Utd manager last week and former caretaker boss Darren Fletcher oversaw two matches in charge before Michael Carrick’s arrival.

Carrick faces two huge tests before the end of the month, with second-place Man City and league leaders Arsenal being Man Utd’s two remaining matches in January.

Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt react in the same way about Man City midfielder Rodri — albeit with one small catch

The Good, The Bad & The Football’s TikTok page shared a video of both Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt picking their combined XI ahead of the derby.

The two Manchester United legends chose a combined Red Devils and Manchester City XI from the Premier League era featuring 10 players from their former club.

The only exception was Man City midfielder Rodri, who went up against former Man Utd midfielder Scholes in the head-to-head picks on the podcast page’s video.

“Rodri,” Scholes said in response.

Butt admitted that he would also pick Rodri on this occasion, but the former United and England midfielder insisted that he would “really” choose Scholes ahead of him.

“I’m going [with] Rodri, because we’ve got to mix it up a little bit,” he said.

“But Scholesy, really, but Rodri.”

Rodri’s impact on Man Utd’s crosstown rivals shows his value to Man City manager Pep Guardiola

Rodri has been an important cog in the machines of Manchester City and the Spain national team after emerging as one of the best midfielders in the world.

Signed from Atletico Madrid in 2019 after his £62.6m release clause was triggered, the 29-year-old midfielder has been a key first-team mainstay for Pep Guardiola.

Rodri’s impressive feats have included winning a continental treble with Man City and lifting the European Championship trophy with Spain at Euro 2024.

The City and Spain midfielder’s stunning exploits in the 2023-24 season also earned the defensive midfielder France Football’s coveted Ballon d’Or award in 2024.
