Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt baffled by one decision Ineos keep making at Man Utd

Since arriving at Manchester United in 2024, Ineos have made some bad decisions; however, one stands out to Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt as worrying.

Manchester United were an absolute mess when Ineos arrived, with years of mismanagement under the Glazer family. As a result, Ineos have had some tough decisions to make since taking charge.

This has included Ineos making hundreds of redundancies in an effort to curb overspending with a bloated workforce. Additionally, Ineos oversaw ticket price rises, which left United fans unhappy and even resulted in Sir Jim Ratcliffe being lumped in with the Glazers.

However, Ratcliffe has invested in United, something that the Glazers never did, and so he is automatically better; there is no denying that. However, one big decision has come under increasing scrutiny.

Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt can’t believe Ineos’ footballing department decision

When Ineos arrived, they set out to implement a brand new footballing structure at United. This saw plenty of upheaval and the arrival of new ‘best in class’ figures.

United appointed Omar Berrada as CEO and followed this decision up by bringing in Jason Wilcox as the director of football, initially as technical director. Both were formerly of Manchester City, and in an interview with The Times, both Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt have expressed their distaste at this.

“You’ve got [director of football] Jason Wilcox, [chief executive] Omar Berrada, then there’s [who previously worked at City],” Scholes explains. “I don’t think Manchester United should do that.

“City have been good for the past ten years, so we hope they bring a bit of that, but it’s not what a Manchester United person would want. It’s not what we want, and it’s probably not what the fans want either.”

Continuing, Butt adds, “It’s unbelievable. Every City staff member goes to Man United now. Real Madrid wouldn’t do it with Barcelona or vice versa.”

Two club greats questioning the two biggest powers in decision-making at United is a clear signal to Ineos, with the decision a controversial one as it is.

Manchester United might have to start footballing structure from scratch

While the current structure is an upgrade on what United previously had, that is hardly anything to write home about.

It was a priority for Ineos to overhaul the behind-the-scenes structure, with Ratcliffe slamming Ed Woodward for not understanding football.

However, both Berrada and Wilcox have left much to be desired, blundering every big decision so far, with recruitment the only positive.

Trying to mimic what Manchester City had is a ridiculous plan, doomed to fail. So if Ruben Amorim doesn’t succeed, both of these should also be out the door, with experts from across Europe considered, opposed to rivals.

Hopefully, the pair will prove everyone wrong and lead United to the top.
