Patrick Kluivert has high hopes for new Manchester United star, he believes he’s an absolute top professional

Manchester United’s players always have a point to prove, and that’s no different when they are on international duty.

The Netherlands are looking to kick on from a solid showing at Euro 2024, where they reached the semi-finals.

Ronald Koeman’s side have a vacancy up front, with free agent Memphis Depay omitted from the squad, and Joshua Zirkzee is looking to fill the gap.

Former Dutch striker Patrick Kluivert is doubtful former United loanee Wout Weghorst is the answer.

He told Voetbal International: “Wout Weghorst can be used very well as a substitute in difficult situations. But I don’t know if he is good enough for ninety minutes every time in the Dutch national team.”

Joshua Zirkzee tipped for key role

Joshua Zirkzee only played a minimal role at the Euros, joining the squad late as an injury replacement.

Kluivert says he has high hopes for Zirkzee, praising his uncomplicated demeanour, suggesting it gives him an advantage.

The former Ajax and Barcelona striker said: “He also seems to be a positive boy, who is well-liked in the group of the teams he plays in. That is not unimportant.

“I do not see any strange antics with him. No things that could distract him from a great career. That is promising and that makes me happy.”

Zirkzee has settled in quickly at Manchester United and is convinced the team will start to improve on the pitch.

Zirkzee confidence boost

Joshua Zirkzee named Zlatan Ibrahimovic as the player he wants to earn comparisons to with his performances.

The way he scored his first Manchester United goal was somewhat reminiscent of the Swede. With an instinctive flick of the boot, on the move, Zirkzee directly a cross into the bottom corner.

The 23-year-old is 11 years younger than Zlatan was when he signed for United in 2016.

So there is plenty of time for Zirkzee to reach the levels of the now retired legend, who tried to sign him for AC Milan this summer.

What Zirkzee needs now, is to top up his goal tally on international duty and return to United with added confidence. Netherlands take on Bosnia and then Germany, and Zirkzee will hope for at least one start, to try and show what he can do.
