Manchester United wing-back Patrick Dorgu received some extremely high praise following his display against West Ham.

A 2-1 win over West Ham continued Manchester United’s unbeaten start to pre-season, with Bruno Fernandes scoring a brace in New Jersey.

Bryan Mbeumo was left out of the squad following his summer move, with the £65m signing given more time to get up to speed before making his debut.

But his absence was quickly forgotten after a thoroughly entertaining first 45 minutes against the Hammers. Ruben Amorim experimented with his tactics, and there were promising signs for United fans.

Patrick Dorgu compared to Patrice Evra after pre-season display

Unlike in the first pre-season friendly against Leeds, Amorim allowed his first-choice XI to play 70 minutes against West Ham before making changes, and there were a few standout performers.

Patrick Dorgu was world-class against West Ham just days after also shining against Leeds, and he received outstanding praise from Rio Ferdinand after the full-time whistle.

Speaking on YouTube, Ferdinand compared Patrick Dorgu to his former United teammate Patrice Evra.

“Big player this season. Another one I think we can get more out of, Dorgu,” Ferdinand said.

“He’s had six months to adjust, and we could be seeing something out of him. He reminds me a lot of Patrice Evra.

“Between the boxes, Dorgu is very good, he gets up and down.”

Evra won the Champions League with United in 2008 before going on to captain the club. He spent eight years at the club between 2006 and 2014.

Patrick Dorgu can step up to new level in 2025/26

Dorgu arrived for £25m in January as Amorim’s first-ever signing at United, and he has already made a positive impression during his short time at the club.

As pointed out by Ferdinand, he has now had six months to settle in, and Dorgu now appears ready to start fulfilling his lofty potential.

Dorgu is perfect for Amorim’s system as an athletic wing-back who is defensively capable and threatening going forward.

In the first two friendlies of the summer, Dorgu is linking up well with Cunha, who prefers to drift inside, leaving plenty of space for Dorgu to run into out wide.

Dorgu promised he would improve in 2025/26 and he has already made an exciting start this summer. With Diego Leon competing for a starting spot, Amorim’s two signings can push each other to new levels.
