‘Pathetic’ Diogo Dalot deserved to be sent off for Man Utd, blasts Ben Foster

Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot was given a red card in injury time against Liverpool after receiving two quick bookings for dissent.

Referee Michael Oliver took exception to Diogo Dalot‘s actions, which came after he wrongly awarded a throw-in to Liverpool.

Manchester United fans were infuriated at the decision, which will result in a one-game suspension for the full-back.

Former referee Dermot Gallagher backed the decision to send him off, even though he could not justify Darwin Nunez avoiding a red for the same offence.

Dalot red card deserved, says Foster

The widely held view was that Diogo Dalot’s red card was ridiculously harsh. However, an opposing perspective has been put forward by former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster.

Foster told The United Stand: “I do think it is a red card. If I was a referee, I’m sending him off for that.

“Honestly, I promise you. He’s just had a yellow card right, to then do that again, it’s pathetic.

“You have to have emotional intelligence at that moment. It’s petulance, just as bad as two-footing sometimes, it’s going to get you booked, it’s going to get you a second booking, so don’t do it.

“If you know what the laws are and the parameters of the game, you are exposing yourself to getting sent off, and that’s what he did. If the referee starts doing that the lads will stop doing all this stupid arm-waving.”

Inconsistent referees

It’s not unusual for Premier League referees to make a strange decision involving Manchester United and their decision blamed on an attempt to set a precedent.

Remember the Manchester derby, when a penalty was given against Manchester United for Rasmus Hojlund apparently holding Rodri back?

These are the type of incidents which happen 10 times a game, yet we have not seen a single Premier League penalty given for this since.

The Dalot incident would be easier to accept if it was applied every week from the beginning of the season, or even from this point moving forward – but we know it won’t be.
