Owen Hargreaves claims ‘brilliant’ Man Utd man is ‘only saving grace’ for Red Devils after 2-0 Wolves defeat

Owen Hargreaves has insisted that Ruben Amorim’s men are a “team that’s in a relegation battle” after Manchester United lost 2-0 to Wolves on Thursday evening.

Manchester United languish in 14th place in the Premier League table and the Red Devils are closer to the relegation zone than the top four.

Ruben Amorim’s side are only eight points clear of 18th-place Leicester City and United are now 11 points adrift of fourth-place Arsenal in the Premier League table.

United have only managed six Premier League wins in the 2024-25 campaign, with the Red Devils suffering eight league defeats in 18 matches played.

Amorim’s men are on a three-match losing streak across all competitions and the United manager’s woes only continued on Boxing Day against Wolves.

Bruno Fernandes was sent off early into the second half before Matheus Cunha scored from a direct corner kick to break the deadlock at the Molineux.

United were left chasing the Premier League contest and their hopes of an equaliser were all but dashed after Hwang Hee-chan scored in injury time for Wolves.

Hargreaves reacts to Man Utd defeat

Ruben Amorim faces a monumental task ahead of him in the 2024-25 Premier League campaign after Manchester United’s form fell off a cliff in recent weeks.

The Red Devils welcome Newcastle to Old Trafford on Monday before travelling away to Anfield for their showdown against Liverpool in their first match in 2025.

Amorim faces a tall order in collecting points from United’s next two matches after his side suffered back-to-back defeats in the Premier League.

United were knocked out of the Carabao Cup quarter-finals last week at the hands of Tottenham before losing 3-0 to Bournemouth at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

“I saw it coming before the game,” Owen Hargreaves said, as per The Peoples Person.

“As soon as I saw the team, I said this won’t be easy. And it wasn’t. They don’t create any sense of play; they don’t look like scoring.”

Speaking on United manager Amorim, Hargreaves said: “Look, he’s got his way of playing.

“He has been successful there at Sporting, but right now, this team needs to find a way to get some form of results.

“Right now, they don’t look like they could get a result anywhere. This is a team that’s in a relegation battle.”

He added: “At some point, you need to watch Manchester United and know who’s gonna play.

“Right now, you never know who’s gonna play because there’s so many different players rotating all the time.

“I think for him, it would be a lot easier to say, these are my guys who are on form, these 14, 15, but right now, there’s nothing.”

Hargreaves on redeeming Man Utd man

Hargreaves insisted that the one redeeming factor at Old Trafford is Amorim, who arrived at the Premier League club in November from Sporting CP.

Erik ten Hag was sacked in late October and Ruud van Nistelrooy was installed as interim United manager for four matches ahead of Amorim’s arrival.

“I don’t see any partnerships,” Hargreaves said.

“You watch United now, you don’t know who’s gonna play. So, I think, in terms of having a bit of consistency, goalscoring was a thing.

“Now it’s the conceding goals from set pieces. There’s a lot of issues.”

When discussing Amorim, the former United midfielder continued: “I think the only saving grace is they’ve got a really good manager.

“He’s a brilliant communicator, but it’s gonna be a lot harder than he thought. They’re gonna have to give him time. He’s a great manager.”
