Manchester United’s transfer business is being held up by the club’s ongoing and delayed takeover.
The longer the protracted Manchester United takeover drags on, the more the club’s summer transfer business risks being affected.
The transfer window officially opens on June 10, and as it stands, there is no timeframe for the club’s decision on new owners – if the Glazers decide to sell at all.
The knock-on effect from the uncertainty means United’s transfer activity will be impacted, journalist David Ornstein tells Five.
Takeover delay hurts Manchester United transfers
Manchester United are subject to bids from Sheikh Jassim, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, and a group of minority investors. The late offer from the Qatari bidder this week has added more complication to the mix.
While all this moves along at the Glazers’ pace, the club risk getting left behind in the transfer market, without the capital to get the big signings done.
Ornstein explained: “United to my knowledge are not able to move on much at all. You speak to people around the club and there seems to be a clear sense that they might have to sell before they can buy.
“Maybe there can be a bit of wiggle room to bring in somebody but by and large, while there is uncertainty over the ownership situation, it could take departures to free up the funds for acquisitions.”
Adrien Rabiot move could happen now
He went on to describe the Harry Kane situation as ‘complicated’ with Tottenham reluctant to sell, especially to United.
Ornstein did say there is one deal he could envisage Manchester United pushing ahead with now, a move for Adrien Rabiot.
He said: “I saw the recent report Rabiot is being looked at again because he is a free agent in the summer. That is the sort of deal you can look to push ahead with.”
French newspaper L’Equipe has reported United boss Erik ten Hag has held talks with Rabiot over a summer move, with his Juventus contract set to expire.
