Only two Premier League players have been worse than Man United captain Bruno Fernandes in front of goal

Bruno Fernandes is currently in the worst form of his Manchester United career.

The 30-year-old is one of very few post-Sir Alex Ferguson signings that have thrived at Old Trafford.

However, Bruno Fernandes has struggled this season and his form hit rock bottom in recent weeks after back-to-back red cards against Tottenham and Porto.

The VAR audio from Fernandes’ red card has been released and the Premier League admitted it was a mistake by overturning his three-game suspension, but Fernandes did not help matters when he then received another red card in the chaotic 3-3 draw in Porto.

Fernandes himself has admitted it’s a “tough moment” in his career, and Erik ten Hag will need his captain to step up after the international break.

Ever since joining United for £47m in 2020, Fernandes has been a pivotal part of United’s attack and has broken records for the number of goals and assists he has gotten.

However, after 11 games this season he has failed to score a single goal and has four assists to his name.

Ten Hag continues to put his faith in Fernandes, but his poor form cannot be ignored. WhoScored have now listed the biggest underperformers in the Premier League this season based on expected goals, and it does not make good reading for Fernandes.

Fernandes has underperformed his expected goals in the Premier League by -1.9. That suggests that he should have scored two goals based on the shots he has taken this season.

According to WhoScored’s statistics, only Fulham’s Adama Traore and Tottenham’s Dominic Solanke have performed worse in front of goal.

Erik ten Hag has new Man United problem

There has been a lot said about United’s poor defensive displays and the unorganised back line under Ten Hag, but there have actually been signs that the defence is improving.

The Red Devils have only scored five goals in seven Premier League matches this season – only Southampton have scored fewer.

United have missed too many big chances this season and the finger has to be pointed at United’s striker duo Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee as well as Fernandes, who is clearly underperforming.
