One of Sir Alex Ferguson’s players has finally taken his first steps into management, he would be proud

John O’Shea would no doubt have done Sir Alex Ferguson proud after the former Manchester United star took up his first managerial post on an interim basis.

The 42-year-old Irishman came through Manchester United’s youth academy and enjoyed a successful period at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson.

John O’Shea made 394 appearances for United’s first team and lifted five Premier League titles, a Champions League, an FA Cup and two League Cups.

The ex-United player left Old Trafford in 2011 and went on to play for both Sunderland and Reading before calling it time on his playing career in 2019.

O’Shea appointed interim manager

Following his football career, John O’Shea took his first steps into coaching and the former Manchester United defender has been building his coaching resume.

The ex-Sunderland star was a coach at Reading and Stoke City, but he was also assistant manager for the Republic of Ireland Under-21s and the Republic of Ireland.

O’Shea also served under Wayne Rooney at Birmingham City, but he left his coaching role at the Championship side after his ex-United teammate was sacked.

Following his exit from Birmingham City, O’Shea has now taken up the interim head coach role at the Republic of Ireland.

The former United man was capped 118 times for the Republic of Ireland and represented his country at both Euro 2012 and Euro 2016.

O’Shea previously served under Stephen Kenny and has now succeeded the former Republic of Ireland manager in the dugout

Stephen Kenny stepped down from his role last November after he failed to secure the Republic of Ireland’s place at Euro 2024 in Germany this summer.

According to The Irish News, O’Shea’s position is temporary and the Football Association of Ireland said a permanent appointment would be made in “early April.”

Speaking on his appointment, O’Shea said: “I’ve always had immense pride representing my country, whether that be during my playing career or as part of the coaching staff.

“It’s great Paddy [McCarthy] has agreed to come on board for the two matches and work will begin straight away to prepare for two top-quality fixtures against great opposition in front of our fantastic home support.

“I’ve got great belief in this group of players.”
