Manchester United’s players redeemed some pride after two consecutive defeats, earning a 3-0 win over Southampton.

Newly promoted Southampton actually began the game well, and were awarded a penalty in the 33rd minute when Diogo Dalot committed a foul on the edge of the penalty box.

Andre Onana pulled off an impressive save from Cameron Archer, and also popped back up to safely collect the rebound.

Just eight minutes later, Manchester United were 2-0 up, thanks to goals from Matthijs de Ligt and Marcus Rashford.

Alejandro Garnacho added a third in second half stoppage time to wrap up a game that was effectively over by half-time.

Matthijs de Ligt praised

Manchester United’s improved performance saw stars impress all over the pitch, in goal, in defence, midfield and attack.

One Manchester United player was selected in the BBC’s Premier League team of the week, now selected by former Watford striker Troy Deeney.

Deeney noted how he felt De Ligt was challenged early on by Southampton’s bright start, before remarking on the centre-back’s quality eventually prevailing.

He said: “His goal sent United on their way, plus another clean sheet. After he scored, he got more confident and we saw the class and quality he has.”

This was United’s second clean sheet of the season, syncing up with being the team’s second victory, following the opening day win over Fulham.

De Ligt faced heavy criticism in midweek from the Dutch press after an error at international level.

Getting the start and then producing a starring performance for United was the perfect way to answer his detractors.

United fans loved De Ligt performance

Manchester United fans had a lot of positive words to say about Mattjijs de Ligt’s performance at St Mary’s.

And in the supporter poll, De Ligt was voted as man of the match. His United teammates also expressed their admiration for his performance.

Next weekend away at Crystal Palace will be a sterner test for De Ligt and United, but this performance will stand him in good stead.

De Ligt is a talented defender, who just like any professional footballer, only gets better with confidence. And he will be feeling on cloud nine after his eye-catching display for his new club.
