Manchester United comfortably beat Southampton 3-0 on Saturday, and for the fans voting there was only one choice as man of the match.

It was a must-win game for Manchester United and much to the delight of Erik ten Hag the result came comfortably.

However, the game was not always comfortable, as it took a huge Andre Onana penalty save to spur United into action.

After this possibly season-defining moment from Onana, United went on to score through Matthijs de Ligt who put in an excellent performance.

Marcus Rashford made it 2-0 with his first goal of the season after struggling for quite some time.

The final goal was added by Alejandro Garnacho who showcased his impact off the bench once again to see United win 3-0.

Now fans have been voting for the player of the match.

Manchester United fans vote Matthijs de Ligt as man of the match

For the first time since the 1-0 win against Fulham, United fans have been afforded the chance to vote for the Man of the Match.

After scoring his first goal for United and also being very strong defensively, there was only ever going to be one winner of the vote for United, that being De Ligt.

On the official Manchester United website’s Man of the Match vote, the results came out like this:

While there was a three-way tie for second place, there was really no question that De Ligt deserved to win as he laid down a real marker for the first time since joining United.

De Ligt showcased his best version, leading from the back and making some crucial interventions to prevent the Saints.

After a horrific international break with the Netherlands, this is exactly what De Ligt needed.

His partnership with Lisandro Martinez may have taken a rocky road to begin with but it is now looking like coming good.

How De Ligt’s teammates responded

After the game in which De Ligt earned praise from Erik ten Hag, he took to Instagram with a message to United fans.

He wrote: “Great fight from the team today and a deserved three points! Carabao Cup next!”

In the comments, he received plenty of responses and support from his teammates with Amad among those to comment.

The talented winger wrote: “What a player” followed by a blown away emoji and a flames emoji.

Bruno Fernandes wrote: “Let’s go”, with a praise emoji added.

“Love it brother”, wrote Mason Mount, while Kobbie Mainoo simply added two fire emojis.
