One Manchester United signing has really impressed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Manchester United signing Rasmus Hojlund has been backed to be a success by former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The former Manchester United boss has given a wide-ranging interview to The Athletic on his spell at Old Trafford, reflecting on his spell at the club, and missing out on top targets like Jude Bellingham.

He explained that signing young players is not easy for United due to the instant expectations for success.

But there is one promising footballer the club signing this summer who Solskjaer has high hopes for.

Solskjaer backs Rasmus Hojlund

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is impressed with the acquisition of Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta, with the 20-year-old brought in to be the club’s lead striker.

Solskjaer explained: “United have signed some good players — Rasmus Hojlund will be exciting and is the type of player United need to be signing.”

It’s probably not surprising to see Solskjaer backing a young Scandinavian striker. He is probably the type of forward he would have loved to work with.

Hojlund is the future

Solskjaer had a variety of strikers during his tenure at United, mostly over 30. Edinson Cavani, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Odion Ighalo were some of the stop-gap solutions.

He had brief success with Anthony Martial but it was not sustained, while his real hopes were pinned on developing Mason Greenwood long-term.

Solskjaer points out he believed Harry Kane was keen on a move, however, he was not given the funds to really ask the question of Tottenham.

Erik ten Hag was not supported in a pursuit of Kane this summer either, with a younger Hojlund chosen.

Long-term, it is expected to be the right move. In some quarters, United were criticised for the quick-fix approach last summer to sign Casemiro in midfield, which really made an impact. However, with the Brazilian already showing indications of a tail-off in form this season, it is clear a longer term midfield solution is needed.
