It is well documented that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had a long list of targets whom he believed to be perfect for Manchester United.
Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo were some of the players targeted by the Norwegian according to his interview with The Athletic.
However, one player who was linked to the club but it never seemed remotely close was Harry Kane.
The former Tottenham Hotspur forward wanted to leave the London club in the summer of 2021 but the deal was never close to begin with.
It seemed City came closest to signing the Englishman but United certainly wanted him.
Solskjaer’s view on Kane
The Norwegian manager, speaking for the first time since his sacking in the autumn of 2021, has given his thoughts on whether the club could have signed Harry Kane.
“I would have signed Kane every day of the week and my understanding was that he wanted to come,” Solskjaer revealed. “But the club didn’t have the budget with the financial constraints from COVID-19, there was no bottomless pit.”
Budget constraints, which have always been an issue for United under the Glazer family, unsurprisingly reared its head when the talk of signing Kane became serious.
Solskjaer’s three signings a season
Another interesting part of the interview was the Norwegian revealing that he would only be able to sign three new ‘main’ players a summer.
“I can’t remember every signing I made, but I should because there was a cap on three main ones every season.”
It’s an interesting revelation from the Norwegian coach when asked for his favourite signing made during his time as manager.
So, the chances of United signing Kane back then, when the Red Devils also wanted a right-winger in Jadon Sancho, were almost remote, especially with the North London club demanding upwards of £100 million for the English striker.
