Manchester United’s players did not just have a sinking feeling after the loss at Liverpool; they had been well and truly sunk.
The Red Devils were beaten 7-0, the worst every result against Liverpool, one we hope never to see repeated.
After the game the players will have wanted to get off that pitch as quickly as possible. But there was were some apologies to make.
United’s travelling fans had paid good money and given up their Sunday to watch that appalling performance, and the coaching staff made sure the players acknowledged them.

Weghorst leads on-pitch apologies
The Athletic reported it was Wout Weghorst who was first to go and applaud the away fans, noting that assistant coach Steve McClaren had to prompt the others to follow.
The report stated: “At the final whistle, Weghorst went over to the United fans who had remained to offer applause.
“Steve McClaren then instructed the rest of the players still on the pitch to do the same.”
By this time, many of the away fans had already left to make their way back to Manchester.
Weghorst himself had been substituted after 58 minutes. He was a non-factor on the day.
He dropped into a deeper role, and was ineffective, completing only nine passes.
He did not attempt a single shot at goal, extending his streak of seven Premier League games without a goal for the club so far.
Weghorst has been very effective for United since joining. He played a part in all three goals against West Ham in the FA Cup in midweek, creating five goalscoring chances in that victory.
Against Liverpool he didn’t create any chances, and like the rest of his teammates, this was just a game too far for him.
His actions at the full-time whistle show the respect he has for supporters, who had to suffer the pain of watching that second half, like he did for the last 30 odd minutes.
It’s not surprising the rest of the players needed some encouragement from McClaren to go and see the fans, they would have been so embarrassed they would have just wanted the pitch to swallow them up.
The mood of celebration at Wembley could not seem further away. What a difference a week makes.
