Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt believes the club could strike a secret agreement with Michael Carrick.

Michael Carrick is the lead contender for the Manchester United head coach job after his impressive results as interim boss.

Ineos are yet to comment on Carrick’s status or the Manchester United job in general, and no public statement is expected before the end of the season.

However, former star Nicky Butt believes that United need to make a decision now, and he believes that secret discussions with Carrick could be underway.

Butt: Get Carrick in now

Nicky Butt argues that Manchester United’s transfer needs are so important that it is important to plan ahead and get the head coach situation sorted.

He told The Good, The Bad & The Football: “The club has to select a manager now, not in three weeks time, and I’d like to think after that result yesterday that they will have a meeting with Michael [Carrick] because they need to sign seven players.

“They have done great they’ve done great for three months, they are still way off winning the league.

“I think they need seven players for the squad not for the starting 11 for the squad. You look at what happened to us against Leeds when you got a few players missing.”

Butt added that United need additions in midfield, full-back, centre-back and even at striker, to properly compete for the title next season.

Butt: Secret talks should be happening

While Manchester United’s football structure means that the recruitment team will lead talks on player transfers.

Butt argues that the head coach will still have a voice: “I think the club has a good 70 per cent say in it, but the manager’s got to have a bit of a say in it. He can’t just be not involved in the conversation.”

He says that United cannot discuss transfers with Carrick unless they intend to appoint him.

“I don’t think the conversations [about transfers] can be going on with the manager… unless they’ve said to him, ‘you’re getting the deal, we can’t open it up to the press yet, but you got a deal.’

“And I think that’ll be happening today after last result.”

At the moment Ineos are keeping everybody guessing. Michael Carrick included.

That could be changing.
