Manchester United 3 Nottingham Forest 1: How the FA Youth Cup final was won

Manchester United’s young players had the full focus of 67,000 fans at Old Trafford as the under-18s battled Nottingham Forest in the FA Youth Cup final.

Goals in each half including a brace from Alejandro Garnacho sealed United’s record 11th FA Youth Cup win, and the club’s first since 2011.

Garnacho’s goals were his 18th and 19th goals of the season a making it seven in six FA Youth Cup games.

How the FA Youth Cup final was won

United were dealt an injury blow in the build-up with Tyler Fredricson not fit to make the squad. 16-year-old centre-back Louis Jackson stepped up to take his place.

1 min: Kobbie Mainoo had a shot at goal inside the first minute, showing an intent to test the Forest goalkeeper after quick footwork inside the box.

13 min: 1-0 to Manchester United. Captain Rhys Bennett gives Manchester United the head by heading in a free-kick from Sam Murray. The goalkeeper got a hand to his effort but could not keep it out.

18 min: Alejandro Garnacho has his first shot at goal, a low effort from outside the box which was comfortably saved.

40 min: Garnacho tries to curl in an effort from the edge of the box which curls just wide.

44 min: 1-1 Forest equalise. A low shot from outside the box squeezes in under the palm of goalkeeper Radek Vitek. The Pole has been excellent in this competition but should have done better there.

49 min: The first sustained bit of pressure in the second half from United sees Charlie McNeill have a shot comfortably saved.

50 min: Right-back Marc Jurado forces the Forest goalkeeper into a low diving save.

64 min: United bring on Hugill and Oyedele for Hansen-Aaroen and McNeill.

77 min: Alejandro Garnacho is fouled on the edge of the box and Manchester United are awarded a debatable penalty, when it probably should have been a free-kick.

78 min: 2-1 to Manchester United: Garnacho steps up to score the winner by rolling the ball down the middle from the penalty spot as the goalkeeper dives to the right. He celebrates with Cristiano Ronaldo’s Siuu celebration.

86 min: United bring on defender Sonny Aljofree for Sam Mather to try and close out the win.

90 min: 8 minutes of injury time are added on.

92 min: Garnacho comes close to adding a third as he fires a shot narrowly over the bar.

94 min: 3-1 to Manchester United: Alejandro Garnacho seals it in injury time after a mazy run, with his shot deflected into the net.
