MUTV pundits name dream Manchester United signings and highlight major mistakes

Manchester United enter this transfer window paying for past mistakes, restricted from spending big due to Financial Fair Play rules.

Back in the summer there was more money to spend. So far the club are yet to see a substantial return.

The rest of the deals are put in context by free agent veteran Jonny Evans currently standing out as the best deal, amid the £100 million plus net spend the club laid out.

New investors Ineos, featuring Sir Dave Brailsford, have a big job on their hands to turn the club’s fortunes around.

Many of the problems on show at United have been gaps created by the players Manchester United missed out on, who were truly one of a kind.

Manchester United dream signing suggested

Signings Manchester United don’t make can sting the most. Even in Sir Alex Ferguson‘s day, there were a few frustrating misses, like Wesley Sneijder.

So perhaps it should be little surprise that in a segment for MUTV on dream signings, two recent near misses came up.

Speaking to The Debate, former academy striker Danny Webber had a clear answer when pressed to pick his one dream signing for the club, given the pick of any player in world football.

He responded: “Not even a doubt Jude Bellingham.”

Bellingham was a player who made it to Manchester United’s training ground in 2020. Club ambassador Bryan Robson said he thought the deal was practically done.

Somehow, United contrived to blow it. Birmingham’s former CEO pointed out how Ed Woodward’s money focused pitch failed to sway the youngster.

More recently, John Murtough has been blamed, for failing to give Sir Alex Ferguson enough time to speak with Bellingham.

One way or another, it was a major error, with Bellingham signing for Real Madrid this summer, and United were not even in the running.

Bellingham, 20, is tearing it up at Real, with 17 goals from midfield in 21 games, a truly staggering return which has highlighted Manchester United’s missed opportunity.

Harry Kane another major miss

Bellingham is not the only near miss. There is a more recent one haunting the club, with Harry Kane a player the club did not try for this summer, giving up on a deal in early June.

Kane has gone on to score at a prolific rate for Bayern Munich, helping to knock Manchester United out of the Champions League too.

Former United defender Wes Brown picked him out as his dream addition, commenting: “I was going to say Kane. Obviously Jude would be better in the sense his age the way he’s playing and everything, but Kane for me was one we missed out on a little bit.”

A little bit, is understating it. The Premier League proven striker has gone onto net 21 times in 15 Bundesliga games.

Manchester United meanwhile have struck just 31 goals in 20 league games this season, a woeful return.

Brown ended the segment asking, “How much is Mbappe?”.

And if you want to get into that, former star Ryan Giggs told Sky Sports in 2017 said when he was assistant, he advised the club to sign the French wonderkid.

United decided one Monaco wonderkid was enough, sticking with Anthony Martial. Sadly the duo’s career trajectories are on very opposite paths, and the club are left hoping that summer signing Rasmus Hojlund can eventually blossom into a Kane/Mbappe equivalent who will eventually be the best in Europe.
