Manchester United called on young talent Toby Collyer to make his first Premier League appearance, when 2-0 down to Liverpool.

Toby Collyer became Manchester United’s 251st academy graduate in the Community Shield against Manchester City last month.

Collyer, 20, came on at half-time against Liverpool with the team two goals down, after an awful performance from Casemiro.

United lost the game 3-0, with Collyer given a very tough task on his Premier League debut.

Toby Collyer debut numbers

Toby Collyer was thrown into a tough game against Liverpool with Manchester United trailing by two goals. And when they made it three, there was a worry it could get really ugly.

Collyer acquitted himself well, with the statistics underlining a simple yet effective performance.

In just 45 minutes, Collyer worked hard and gave United’s midfield something different, which was much-needed after Casemiro’s first half struggles.

MUTV pundits give verdict on Toby Collyer

Toby Collyer’s performance was discussed on MUTV’s Matchday Review, with a positive assessment.

Former defender David May commented: “There was a lot of pressure coming on for the young kid.

“For five or minutes maybe he was a bit in awe, I thought he conducted himself really well, I thought he was brilliant.”

Former academy defender Phil Bardsley was in agreement, adding: “Its not an easy fixture to come in, being 2-0 down, it shows the trust manager has in young players.

“He should be proud, coming into a hostile game, it was tough, he stood his own, he was good in there.

“Once he got a foothold in the game he didn’t look out of place. To get the experience to play in a game like this was fantastic.”

Collyer’s first two assignments have been tricky, against Manchester City and Liverpool. He will hope he will get more minutes in United’s next game, after the international break against Southampton.
