Manchester United winger Antony was recalled to the team as Erik ten Hag rotated against Barnsley.

Brazilian winger Antony was a man in the spotlight coming into the game against Barnsley.

With just one minute of action this season, he needed the game time, and he was expected to deliver.

Antony can be pleased with his performance, winning a penalty and stepping up to score it, putting United 2-0 up, with the team going on to win 7-0.

Antony performance praised

Manchester United supporters were encouraged by Antony’s performance, with the winger completing all 90 minutes.

Antony’s performance was a topic of discussion on MUTV, with a positive verdict coming in.

Former United winger Mickey Thomas told the channel: “I’m made up for him. He was under a lot of pressure tonight.

“He’s done it for me, he’s got the penalty, he’s got the goal, but also his link up play with Marcus Rashford has been very good as well.”

The way United’s front three linked up was very encouraging, and Antony deserves credit for that. The goal seemed to lift his confidence, with a spirited performance following.

Former academy prospect Danny Webber pointed out that the winger’s time on the sidelines could serve as a positive.

He said: “It does give you the fight inside to take that opportunity when you come into the team.

“He’s performed well, there’s more to come from him.”

Antony was brave to step up

Most expected Marcus Rashford to take the penalty. Antony was the one who stepped up instead.

Antony won the penalty after he was fouled in the box, and given his lack of game time, you can understand his desire.

Was it desperation, perhaps. Yet it was also passion. Antony wants to fight for his place, and knew he had to impress.

It was also brave. Antony would have been crucified by the press if he had missed his spot-kick.

He found the net and that will lift his confidence. He played with a bit of spark after that. There’s still a long way to go – but he did his job, and can be pleased with his first start of the season. More opportunities will await.
