Manchester United returned to winning ways with a victory on the road at Southampton, a first victory since the opening game of the season.

Two consecutive defeats plus an international break meant Manchester United supporters have to wait almost a month between win.

United’s victory was a vital confidence boost for the team, and has moved the side gradually back up the Premier League table.

Wes Brown praises Man Utd duo

Former Manchester United centre-back Wes Brown spoke to MUTV’s Matchday Review following the away win.

Brown selected goalscoring centre-back Matthijs de Ligt as his man of the match, but also made a point of talking up Andre Onana, who saved a penalty when the score was 0-0.

He commented: “The keeper was outstanding, and a clean sheet. There was lots of positives in this game.

De Ligt [is my man of the match]. He had a lot of stick this week. He needed a big performance and he put one in.

“Some of his clearances in the first half, he was in the right spots, he was solid. A clean sheet and to top it off with a goal, is a bonus.”

Brown wants more from United

Wes Brown did have one complaint, he felt Manchester United should have scored more goals.

The team were 2-0 up by half-time and only added a third goal in second half stoppage time.

This did reset United’s goal difference back to zero – but the game also felt like a missed opportunity to rack up the scoreline.

Brown said: “We should have scored a lot more goals. We should have done a lot better there.”

United had 20 efforts on goal and 10 on target. But the story of the season is a lack of ruthlessness. This didn’t cost the team against Southampton – but it did haunt them in previous games.

The 3-0 scoreline matched Erik ten Hag’s biggest ever Manchester United win. His highest victory as a United boss is either 3-0 or 4-1, a three goal margin.

And the last time United scored five goals in a match was in 2021 on the opening game of the season against Leeds under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, a 5-1 win.

After recent results this 3-0 win was a step in the right direction – but United fans are entitled to ask for even more.
