MUTV pundit gives verdict on Mason Mount performance for Manchester United v Luton

Once again Mason Mount was among the substitutes when manager Erik ten Hag picked Manchester United’s line-up.

It has been a tough start to the season for Mason Mount, and supporters were confused by Erik ten Hag‘s comments ahead of the match that there have been players performing too well to keep him out.

The midfielder got a little more playing time than anticipated on Saturday when he came off the bench in the first half after Christian Eriksen suffered an injury.

Mount came on in the 40th minute in the win over Luton and had one of his best games yet in a Manchester United shirt as he drove the team forward.

Verdict on Mason Mount performance

Mason Mount put Luton under pressure without the ball, and worked hard on it too, creating one goalscoring chance and making six ball recoveries.

Mount was praised by former United trainee Luke Chadwick, who told MUTV’s Matchday Review that he was encouraged by the England international’s performance.

Chadwick said: “Mason Mount did come on and inject more pace, he is a very different type of player to Christian Eriksen, always looking to run forward, move forward, and then run with the ball and get in the box himself.

“There is loads more to come from Mason, he’s an excellent, excellent player, this was a step in the right direction with the performance put on when he came on today.”

Mason Mount in contention to start

Mason Mount is in contention to start Manchester United’s next game after the international break, away at Everton.

Whether he will, depends somewhat on the role the manager has in mind for him. If viewed as a rotational option for Bruno Fernandes, then he will likely remain a back-up.

But he was really bought to play alongside Fernandes, and Mount could be preferred to Christian Eriksen, in a deeper, role, or perhaps stationed out on the wing win.

Everton’s physical midfield may make this game more suited to Sofyan Amrabat and Scott McTominay, but as he showed in the weekend’s hard fought win, he can be relied up on to dig in and show a bit of fight along with his guile.
