Miguel Delaney: Michael Carrick tactical shift making “massive difference” to Man Utd stars

Michael Carrick returned to Manchester United over a month ago, and there are already clear signs of improvement since the former midfield ace took charge from the dugout.

Ruben Amorim was dismissed by Manchester United at the beginning of January after a run of poor results cast doubts over the team’s chances of qualifying for Europe.

United missed out on Champions League qualification last season after finishing 15th in the Premier League and losing the Europa League final to Tottenham.

It wasn’t the start Amorim wanted after arriving at Old Trafford in November 2024.

However, many of the problems remained, even at the beginning of the 2025/26 season, despite Amorim making Senne Lammens his first choice and loaning out Andre Onana to Trabzonspor.

Carrick has thus far proven to be an antidote to Amorim’s troubled reign at Old Trafford, winning his first four games before United drew 1-1 with West Ham on Tuesday night.

The Red Devils are still fourth in the Premier League, meaning they are on course to achieve this season’s main objective.

Michael Carrick’s obvious change led to positive reaction at Man Utd

Perhaps one of the most obvious changes Carrick has made at United is the system.

Amorim was a back-three fundamentalist, but his midfield at United was often overrun by smaller opponents.

It didn’t help that Amorim would often overlook Kobbie Mainoo, who has been given a new lease of life since Carrick returned, starting in every game alongside Casemiro thus far.

Respected journalist Miguel Delaney claims he’s heard that Carrick playing players in the right positions has had a ‘massive difference’ to the team.

Speaking on Indo Sport, Delaney said: “This is one big thing I’ve heard. It’s made a massive difference for players to get to play in their own position, just to feel comfortable. And that, allied with just a change in mood from a different manager, has a kind of a multiplying effect for a while.

“It obviously runs out after a time, but right now, it’s really propelled the team.”

Carrick has opted for a 4-2-3-1 system since his return and it has led to better results as well as performances.

Although Carrick might change some personnel from his team against Everton, the 44-year-old is expected to stick with the current system for the remainder of the season because it’s getting results.

Michael Carrick is keeping stars in Manchester during brief break

United have a short break until they take on Everton in their next Premier League fixture on February 23.

According to Simon Stone of BBC Sport, Carrick confirmed that he will keep his squad in Manchester during the 13-days to ensure they are working on their fitness and sharpness.

There were suggestions United would do a warm-weather camp or even a friendly match in the Middle East, but it sounds like they are completely focused on securing Champions League qualification.
