Manchester United’s preparations for the 2026/27 campaign will kick off this week, with Michael Carrick sending an ambitious message ahead of a return to Carrington.
After a long 45-day break, Manchester United are finally about to return for pre-season.
United’s players are set to return on Thursday, those not involved in the World Cup, along with the first-team coaching staff.
Ineos believes the Premier League title is winnable, and so this summer’s preparations are vital to set the club up to achieve this, with Michael Carrick now outlining his ambitions, which are a call on Ineos to step up.

Michael Carrick’s ambitions and plans for Manchester United during 2026/27
Ahead of the players returning to Carrington, Carrick has sent a message on club media, voicing his confidence about how good next season can be.
But in explaining his desire to compete on all fronts, he has indirectly issued a bit of a gauntlet to Ineos.
“We know that we need to keep improving. We have a huge responsibility here to win and play exciting football. That never changes, and we should always be striving to compete for the biggest trophies. There are steps to take, but we are in a good place to take them.
“We’ve got a fantastic group of players, and we believe they have the required standards of talent, commitment, and determination to be successful here. They love being at the club, and we can see how badly they want it; that gives us the confidence to know we’re really building something and moving in the right direction.
“We know we’ve got what it takes to beat the best teams in this league. Now it’s about doing that over a full Premier League campaign, while also fighting for every trophy available to us.
“I cannot wait to lead the group forward next season and for those special European nights to return to Old Trafford. We are ready to kick on and give you more of the great moments that United are all about.”

Ineos need to give Carrick a squad capable of competing on all four fronts
Carrick’s ambition is admirable, but with the squad he currently has, there is little to no chance of competing across the four competitions, simply due to a lack of options.
In midfield, right now, United have Mason Mount and Kobbie Mainoo as the sole senior options – thanks to Manuel Ugarte’s ACL tear – with Jacob Devaney and Jim Thwaites very exciting young options, but they shouldn’t have the pressure put on them.
This is not a midfield which will win United trophies, even with the addition of Ederson, Michael Carrick needs another two, plus a versatile forward and maybe even some defensive reinforcement.
Only then can Carrick’s target of challenging for all trophies be considered a realistic possibility, because as things stand, United might struggle to compete in two, let alone four.
Carrick proved last season that he will succeed, but he needs Ineos’ help with transfers.
Give Carrick the two extra midfielders, left-winger and a back-up striker and watch him make good of this ambition.
