Michael Carrick explains why extended March international break has actually helped Man Utd for Leeds match

Michael Carrick has insisted that Manchester United have seen a major boost for their injured players during the March international break and ahead of the Leeds United match.

Manchester United will return to Premier League action on 13th April against Leeds United, with the Red Devils hosting their rivals at Old Trafford for an 8pm kick-off.

However, the Red Devils have had to wait a sizeable 24-day period between the Leeds match and Man Utd’s last outing vs Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.

United’s 2-2 draw against Bournemouth came ahead of the March international break and the Red Devils missed out on the FA Cup fixtures last weekend.

Michael Carrick singles out Lisandro Martinez and what the March international break offered the Man Utd star

Lisandro Martinez has missed the last five Premier League matches under Michael Carrick after he suffered a calf injury, with his last appearance coming in February.

The 28-year-old Argentine has since returned to Manchester United first-team training amid the Red Devils’ four-day training camp in Dublin this week.

Carrick has been handed a major boost with the news around Martinez, with Harry Maguire set to miss next Monday’s Leeds United match due to a suspension.

Speaking on Inside Carrington, the 44-year-old United legend has said that Martinez’s recovery is one example of how the March break has helped his side.

“Talking of defenders, Licha is back in training today as well, obviously after a few games out, positive to have him back ahead of the next set of games,” Carrick said.

“Yeah, as you’re saying about the break, it’s actually worked in our favour in some ways of getting players back.”

Lisandro Martinez is not the only boost for Man Utd as Michael Carrick says Mason Mount’s recovery has been moving forward

Just like Lisandro Martinez, Mason Mount has returned to training with the Man Utd first team for the tail end of the 2025-26 Premier League season at Old Trafford.

Mason Mount has not featured for the Red Devils since Carrick’s first match in charge as interim head coach, with Man Utd beating Manchester City 2-0 in January.

Carrick, much like he said with Martinez, singled out how United No 7 Mount has capitalised on the training time during the extended March international break.

“You know, Mason’s back in and around it as well and he’s been training,” he added.

“And he’s had that period of time to build that up. So, to have Licha back around us this week is good. And obviously Harry [Maguire]’s going to miss the game.

“So, to have Licha back in around with Leny [Yoro] and Ayden [Heaven] and just want to keep getting stronger as a group, really. So that’s part of this, trying to use that to do that this week.”

United are third in the Premier League table and the Red Devils are one point ahead of fourth-place Aston Villa ahead of the Leeds match at Old Trafford next Monday.
