Micah Richards and Gary Lineker both felt strongly about one Manchester United player’s quality performance against Liverpool that has flown under the radar.

Manchester United have now picked up consecutive Premier League wins for the first time since the start of Ruben Amorim’s Red Devils managerial reign at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils produced a strong showing on their visit to Anfield, with United taking the lead over Liverpool in the first half thanks to forward Bryan Mbeumo.

Bryan Mbeumo broke the deadlock in the second minute and United maintained their advantage over Liverpool before the Reds climbed back into the contest on Sunday.

Cody Gakpo netted a crucial equaliser for Liverpool in the 78th minute, but Ruben Amorim’s men fought back and restored their lead six minutes later at Anfield.

Bruno Fernandes lofted a first-time cross into the Liverpool box from the left and Harry Maguire was able to turn a header into the back of the net from close range.

Micah Richards and Gary Lineker both react to Mason Mount’s role in Man Utd’s Premier League win over Liverpool

Mason Mount retained his place in the Red Devils starting XI after his strong showing in Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Sunderland at Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old former Chelsea ace netted for United against Sunderland ahead of the October international break, with Mason Mount praised for his performance.

Mount was deployed centrally in Ruben Amorim’s tactical system for United against Liverpool after striker Benjamin Sesko was dropped to the bench on Sunday.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Micah Richards and Gary Lineker were full of high praise for United’s current No 7 shirt-holder for his superb performance.

“I thought Man United were absolutely superb,” Richards said.

“I’ve questioned the system a lot. I think the system can work against teams who are superior, say, on the ball, on the counter-attack.

“But I think it was more than that today. I think [they were] organised. I think Mount makes a massive difference in the way they press.”

Reacting to what Richards said about Mount, Lineker added: “Great energy.”

Micah Richards praises Mason Mount alongside three other Man Utd players after the Liverpool match at Anfield

Mason Mount’s contributions on the weekend came to an end in the 61st minute after United manager Amorim withdrew him for summer signing Benjamin Sesko.

Richards was in awe at the “energy” that Mount offered, but he also praised Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Amad Diallo for their roles in the win over Liverpool.

“So much energy [Mount], a little bit more mobile,” he continued.

Richards added: “I thought Mbeumo and Cunha were brilliant. I thought Amad, before he went off, in [the] forward areas was dangerous.

“But what I liked the most about Man United was the spirit. How many times have people talked about them buckling under pressure? And when it went to 1-1, the crowd, the Anfield crowd was up.”

United will host Brighton at Old Trafford for their final Premier League match in October before travelling to City Ground to face Nottingham Forest in November.
