‘Maybe you feel that…’ Ruben Amorim admits he had second thoughts about his Man Utd decision ‘four months ago’

Ruben Amorim’s baptism of fire is about to come to an end this season, with potentially three games standing between glory and failure.

The Man Utd side he took over might have been 13th, but they were only five points off Champions League places.

Fast-forward to near the end of the season, the club is set to finish at its worst-ever league place and, in a worst-case scenario, feasibly finish 17th!

Ahead of a crunch run of fixtures including the Europa League semifinals, Ruben Amorim has admitted that he had second thoughts about his decision about ‘four months ago’.

Ruben Amorim wavered on Man Utd decision

Despite being at Old Trafford for only about six months or so, Amorim has taken a lot of big decisions that have ruffled the feathers at Man Utd.

Be it his handling of Marcus Rashford or leaving the squad short of options by sanctioning multiple first-team exits without arrivals to match, it’s been one gamble after another.

Through it all, he’s insisted that this short-term pain will help the team be sustainably better in the long term instead of chasing another false dawn.

However, the biggest decision he took against his own accord was arriving at Man Utd mid-season, with Ineos forcing his hand when he preferred to come at the end of the season.

He’s now admitted that while there are no regrets at this moment in time, he did have second thoughts about his decision to join mid-season four months ago.

He said: “If you ask me, like four months ago, with all the problems maybe you feel that feeling I should be stronger in starting in the beginning of the season. But, today, I have that feeling that this is something that is going to help us in the future.”

Ineos and Amorim’s gamble has worked

It goes without saying that this season hasn’t gone to anyone’s liking but Amorim’s larger point stands true.

He’s clearly the man Ineos have hitched their wagon to for the long-term so for him to go into his first summer window armed with full knowledge of the squad is invaluable.

He’s effectively had six months of free hits, minus the crucial Europa League games where United have succeeded anyway.

Had he arrived in the summer and learned about the squad on the basis of some friendly games, there was a chance that United could have started a new season under him in poor form, a death knell for a new manager.

Instead, this season has laid bare the reality of the squad and there’s a full pre-season plus transfer window ahead to address the issues on what is clearly a long-term project.

Ineos’ gamble has worked.
