Ben Foster expresses doubt over Marcus Rashford’s future, Man Utd loanee ‘miles off it’ with questionable demeanour

Marcus Rashford is at a career crossroads with his Aston Villa loan deal expiring at the end of the season.

After two difficult seasons at Manchester United, Marcus Rashford eventually fell out of favour when Ruben Amorim became head coach.

The 27-year-old would leave Old Trafford on a temporary deal that would see him play for Aston Villa for the remainder of the 2024/25 season, although the agreement includes a buy option if Unai Emery wishes to sign the forward permanently for £40 million.

Rashford has taken Ollie Watkins’ place in Villa’s team after making 17 appearances, scoring four goals and registering a further six assists.

The United loanee scored from the penalty spot as Villa lost 2-1 against Man City at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night. A late winner that could hurt Villa’s attempts to qualify for the Champions League.

Villa will struggle to fund a deal for Rashford without Champions League football, with the forward’s future firmly up in the air as we approach the summer transfer window.

Former United striker Wayne Rooney wants Rashford to return to Old Trafford because he feels the forward has unfinished business at his boyhood club.

Ben Foster believes Marcus Rashford is still ‘miles off’ his best

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster insists Villa manager Unai Emery is unlikely to sanction the permanent signing of Rashford.

Although Emery prefers Rashford to Watkins and his other striker options, Foster thinks a potential deal presents too much risk for Villa.

Foster also referenced Rashford’s performance against Paris Saint-Germain when Villa were knocked out of the Champions League quarter-finals.

Speaking on his Fozcast podcast, Foster said: “I think a lot of people saw him against PSG the other night and were like, ‘Oh my god, that’s Rashford’. That’s what you want from him and there were glimpses, I totally agree.

“During the first leg though, he was miles off it and he didn’t really look happy again.”

Foster highlights Rashford risk for Aston Villa

There are no guarantees that Villa will try to sign Rashford for £40m, but the option is there for them to make it happen, so long as the player agrees to the move.

Foster believes a deal for Rashford would prove too risky for Villa this summer.

The footballer turned YouTuber added: “I just think it’s too risky for Aston Villa and I don’t think Unai Emery would sanction it. He’s on so much wages wise at Man United, I think they are going to try and sell him because they need him for PSR [profitability and sustainability rules].

“I don’t think Amorim really wants him around the place and he doesn’t suit the system.”
