Manchester United are doing a lot more business than expected this window and part of it is down to getting good money from the sale of Mason Greenwood.
The United academy product was never going to return to the club so they did well to get a fee that puts him amongst Man United’s best sales.
The player’s quality was never in question so the interest in his services was plenty, which United used well to get a good deal.
Greenwood has now started repaying that fee and then some, as he has scored on consecutive starts for the French team, this time against Augsburg.

French press reacts to free-scoring Mason Greenwood
Greenwood marked his arrival in Marseille in style with a debut goal against Pau but this game vs Augsburg was against a much better opposition.
The forward scored the second goal of the game in a 3-1 victory with a clinical finish in the far corner with his right foot after taking on the defender with a couple of stepovers.
Olympique Marseille posted the video of the goal on their X account which can be seen below:
French press were delighted with the player as Lephoceen wrote: “One of the star recruits of the summer, he is not yet at 100%, but he scored in his first two games, a good start.
“There were some interesting combinations, notably between Harit and Greenwood, who already seem to be developing a good technical affinity with the rest of his teammates.”
Sport called him the “cornerstone” of the team just two games after his arrival, writing: “Barely arrived in the Phocaean city and Mason Greenwood didn’t hang around to show his talent.
“Greenwood will therefore be able to prove that his recruitment was not a mistake and that he will be a real cornerstone of De Zerbi’s team. The Marseille supporters are excited and we understand why!”
Greenwood’s success is good for Man United
Mason Greenwood succeeding at Marseille is extremely good news for United. Just like his term at Getafe allowed them to cash in on the player, they have added incentive if he impresses in France.
That is because United negotiated a large sell-on clause in the sale which entitles them to a percentage of the profit on the transfer fee if Marseille sells him in the future.
If Greenwood continues in the form he has begun at Marseille, he could soon outgrow the club and vultures will start cycling.
United will then hope that a kings ransom is negotiated by the Ligue 1 club, a part of which will directly go to United’s coffers. It will be pure profit too, as the player is no longer on the club’s books.
So, ultimately, from a purely financial point of view, every goal that Greenwood scores increases the chance of United earning more money in the future.
