Mason Greenwood netted his 10th Manchester United professional career goal in yesterday’s win over Tranmere.
The teenager scored from the penalty spot to round off United’s 6-0 away victory.
He now has goals in the Premier League, FA Cup, Europa League and Carabao Cup this season.
Greenwood looks like he has the making of a special player and even the way he stroked home his penalty with his right foot was eye catching.
Greenwood’s goals put him in elite company. And he has bettered some of United’s modern greats.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney were both 19 when they scored their 10th goals for United.
Greenwood is seven months younger than Marcus Rashford was when he hit his 10th for the club.
The only United player to better Greenwood, was Norman Whiteside, who scored his 10th goal at a younger age back in 1984.
Cristiano Ronaldo went on to score 118 goals for United. Wayne Rooney went on to become United’s highest ever goalscorer with 253, breaking Sir Bobby Charlton’s record.
That is the scale of the mountain Greenwood has to climb, and his tally of 10 is minute by significance of Rooney’s tally.
Just to be discussed in the same conversation with recent United heroes shows how well Greenwood is doing.
Greenwood had a headstart on both of those players, making his debut and scoring at 17, while Rooney and Ronaldo only signed for United when they were 18.
Even so, Greenwood has delivered, and truth be told, he would probably like to do even better. This was ‘just’ his third goal in his last 10 games in all competitions this season.
There is still room for improvement in the young man’s game, and the club can do him a big favour by signing a creative player who can help supply him with more chances.
