Manchester United signed Austria international midfielder Marcel Sabitzer on loan on transfer deadline day.

Sabitzer will strengthen Manchester United’s midfield, and he also brings with him a real goal threat.

The midfielder knows where the net is, and only three Manchester United players have scored more career club goals than him.

These are Wout Weghorst (172), Bruno Fernandes (157), and Marcus Rashford (111).

Marcel Sabitzer career goal breakdown

Marcel Sabitzer has scored 103 club career goals. Many of these came early in his career.

He netted 11 times for Austrian side Admira Wacker and 12 times for Rapid Vienna.

Sabitzer netted 52 goals for RB Leipzig, plus a 27-goal campaign on loan at Red Bull Salzburg in 2014/15.

He has scored two goals for Bayern Munich, taking his total tally to 103.

The eye-catching season was Sabitzer’s one at Red Bull Salzburg. He was able to score so prolifically due to his role as a striker.

Anthony Martial career goal breakdown

Manchester United striker Anthony Martial has scored fewer career goals than Sabitzer. He netted his 101st in midweek against Nottingham Forest.

He has struck 85 for Manchester United, 15 for Monaco, and one for Sevilla.

What we can take from this

Martial has not had the luxury of playing in the Austrian Bundesliga, so this is hardly a like for like comparison, but it does tell us two things.

That the French striker has less career goals than he should, at the age of 27. He needs to step up and start producing more regularly for United, and that starts with staying fir.

This also tells us that Manchester United have a very interesting player with Sabitzer, who should be able to score far more regularly than he did for Bayern.

His goals for Leipzig knocked Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham out of the Champions League quarter-finals in 2020, and he will have no fear bringing his game to the Premier League.
