Manuel Ugarte lifts lid on ‘difficult’ season at Man Utd ahead of potential exit

Manuel Ugarte has shown gratitude to his family and partner after a ‘difficult’ season on a personal level at Manchester United.

Manchester United achieved their season objective by securing Champions League qualification, but Ruben Amorim was sacked in January following a topsy-turvy first half to the season.

The results improved tenfold under Michael Carrick, but Ugarte rarely featured in the team. That has led to uncertainty over the Uruguay international’s future at Old Trafford.

Despite making just eight starts in the Premier League this season, Ugarte is still expected to be named in the Uruguay squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Manuel Ugarte shows gratitude after ‘difficult’ season

Like many of his teammates, Ugarte has shared pictures on Instagram from United’s final home game of the season.

Ugarte’s future is up in the air, and he was an unused substitute in United’s 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest.

Along with several photos, Ugarte captioned his post with the following message to show gratitude to those who have supported him throughout a ‘difficult’ season.

“[A] season with many difficult moments, but always smiling. Thank you to my family who always supported me from afar and you, love, who stood by my side on the toughest days.”

Ugarte has struggled at United since his 2024 transfer from Paris Saint-Germain.

Since Carrick returned to the club, the 44-year-old has favoured Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro in midfield.

United need to make £25m to avoid a loss on Ugarte this summer.

What has Michael Carrick said about Manuel Ugarte?

Earlier in his interim tenure, Carrick highlighted Ugarte’s professionalism.

Ugarte wasn’t getting many minutes at the time.

“I like Manu a lot,” Ugarte said.

“He’s been terrific around the group and I’m hugely impressed with his attitude and how he goes about it and his training qualities. He has a lot of really good attributes…

“Manu’s obviously desperate to get on the pitch more and he’s doing everything he can in training and he is a big part of the group, so I think it’s just a case of the results and the boys playing so well.”
