Manchester United are stepping up interest in Aaron Wan-Bissaka, report The Sun.
It is speculated Crystal Palace would seek around £40 million for the full-back.
Wan-Bissaka was linked to United in January. At the time we were sceptical, pointing out that Diogo Dalot’s presence complicates a deal.
Two decisions since then from interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hint that a move for Wan-Bissaka could get the green light from the board.
Firstly club captain Antonio Valencia is to be released. United decided not to take up his option to extend his deal, with a deadline passing on March 1 [via BBC].
More importantly, there has been a role change for Dalot.
The former Porto full-back has been used in an attacking role by Solskjaer over the past fortnight.
He played on the wing against Southampton, PSG, and Arsenal and has looked bright in each.
His quick feet and crossing ability makes him a natural for the role, although he will have to fight it out with Tahith Chong and potentially another new signing.
Ashley Young, at right-back, is merely a stop-gap for another season.
It is very possible now that United sign Wan-Bissaka, and play Dalot in front of him next season, if the Portuguese youngster can keep improving.
Dalot’s versatility means no longer does it look like a case of either-or with Wan-Bissaka. It can be both.
Wan-Bissaka has emerged as one of the Premier League’s top tackling full-backs this season and is in line for an England call-up. At United he could get even better.
